TRCK REVIEW: Pugfish - Tango
If we talk about young and upcoming bands here in the blog, we often take a shot at their development as, well, a band that release raw recordings of their written material and see if they got the potential to make a mark in this tough music community. Days ago, i received a private message from one of my close friends and sent me a band called Pugfish, a college band from, what i can assume, Ateneo De Manila.
These youngsters have released demos in their soundcloud account, some songs have this unoriginal blend of Kodaline-y sentimentality and cutesy pop-folk elements like The Lumineers, or Lenka. From looking at their old material from the very start, i could just close my web tab right away. But what got my attention before i closed it is that they've posted a brand new single/track titled "Tango", released a few days ago.
"Tango" incorporates the contemporary sounding guitar riffs and sounds of drumstick tapping before the chorus along with the boy/girl tandem vocals that koind of reminds me of Of Monsters and Men or The Head and the Heart or any other western sounding coffee shop band. The sense of rush in the intro along with the swell bass lines and the lead vocals enters with a very summery youthful singing where he talks about how the boy messed the situation up and the only way to solve the situation somehow is to dance and forget about all of the problems. At least that's what i can receive from the song but what i'm getting at is it's not how catchy and happy-sounding this track is. What sticks out here is that they kind of moved on from being the generic poppy band type where today you get the same band that sounds like the other.
That being said, Pugfish has improved in both writing some clever parts for each instrument, most especially that last bit where the song shifted into a tango cameo, and also some of the lyrical content as well in "Tango".
I'm hoping for the best of this band. Hope they get better pegs while they're still young.
