TRCK OF THE WEEK: KRNA - Wide Eyes
KRNA is an indiependent four-piece dream-pop/ambient rock outfit based in Cagayan De Oro, and for the past year they have released some of the most engaging material that I discovered recently. Hearing "And Ever", their previous single, left me spellbound by the time I went through its expressive singing and performance and it throws in some drone like guitars to create intensity. Their singles are leading up to an EP release which is due to release in the next two weeks under a local distributor, Melt Records, an online store, and Bomba Press, a very familiar independent label based in Cebu City.
Now let's progress and go forward to their most recent single, "Wide Eyes". Listening to this single is like listening to KRNA all over again for the first time. The song consistently delivers by showing great arrangements, power, and substance.
Although this isn't just a review that discusses how i completely like the track. There are some parts in the mixing that felt really off, most probably those parts include the distant vocals and pianos. But their lead female vocals decided to turn it up a notch with her spectacular way of singing to cover up most of what's happening in the background. So far, i have nothing else but to say that. The rest of the track was really great, the electric guitars are a bit far-flung but i still think this gives character to their music.
Overall, listening to KRNA's "Wide Eyes" is like listening to a hybrid band that consists of Cynthia Alexander's contemplative songwriting, Angel Olsen's slightly gritty instrumentation, and Cocteau Twin's spacious production. Pretty weird comparisons, right? Combine it, you'd get a solid performance altogether. This track is a must listen and this is a band that you guys must watch out for.
