TRCK OF THE WEEK: Capacities - Walls
For those who haven't heard of Capacities, they're a 7-piece math-rock/indie folk band from the University of the Philippines. I express displeasure against some math rock bands that bear no substance in their songwriting nor they have a proper story to portray with their instrumentals.
With that in mind, I would always take notice whenever Capacities were always praised on my Facebook News Feed. Being the curious man that I am, I ended up checking out this band, to see if their material lives up to the acclaim. This new track of theirs titled "Walls", is an impressive, stylistic effort that blends together multiple strong points from the band: soothing vocals from their two lead singers harmonizing akin to having two Clara Benins right on top of each other, a captivating drum roll that builds to the second half of the track, and swirling melodies from their lead guitars. It's what one would expect from a band that attempts to fuse indie-folk and math rock.
Nevertheless, I was pretty darn impressed how well they executed everything here. The swirling melodies turn up the tempo a bit, changing the pace of the track to a slightly more powerful tone to the guitars, as the track jumps from one different riff to another. "Walls" tells a great story of one feeling closed in within their emotions. The doubt of a person that keeps their space smaller everytime their thoughts are filled up. "Walls" sounds like a Run Dorothy song sans the boring singing and guitar riffs that Run Dorothy has. Capacities deliver an excellent swoop of instrumental greatness that keeps the listener invested in every section of the track.
