TRCK OF THE WEEK: MELLOW FELLOW - you'll be alright
Manila-based indie-rock multi-instrumentalist and "internet artist", Mellow Fellow, has released a brand new single titled "you'll be alright" with the help of Ourselves The Elves' Teenage Granny (Aly Cabral's solo project). The 22-year old soloist is known for spawning 'mellow' singles for more than a couple of years in his Soundcloud account with tracks like "How Was Your Day" featuring the Soundcloud's pop princess Clairo, "Tired", and "Dancing". His latest offering, "you'll be alright", shortly dabbles in experimental territory. The drum machine abruptly enters, marking the start of the second half. It's as if the kick just came from Eggboy's "Sana 'Di Mo Ako Iniiwasan", with how punchy and groovy it turned out to be. Teenage Granny highlights the track with her soulful voice, melding with Mellow Fellow's signature Joe Pass-esque jazz guitar chords.
Unsuprisingly, bedroom pop artists like Mellow Fellow haven't disappointed me so far, from his already released material to previously unreleased demos. His other band, The Benchwarmers, is one of south's rowdiest bands, and shows that Mellow Fellow stays true to his craft no matter how often he switches from project to project.
To be completely honest, I rarely get impressed by a majority of this generation's young pop musicians composing tracks with little to no effort; stuff that you usually hear like thin guitar leads, generic drum machine loops, and the absence of a catchy hook. Exceptional talents like 'cuco', Cosmo Pyke, Gus Dapperton, and our very own Mellow Fellow have created their own characters in their songs respectively.
"you'll be alright", for me at least, solidifies his persona as one of the internet's most lovable musicians. Even the smallest efforts like playing the guitar and programming your instruments in your bedroom can bring you to stardom and it can only be determined by technical skill and substance, and for me, Mellow Fellow just tops it all off with his undeniable talent. "you'll be alright" was a massive improvement from his lo-fi roots. This Jazzy Robinson can still make me groove in my dancing shoes, even in a gloomy new year's eve. Catch Mellow Fellow's live debut alongside with fellow bedroom pop artist Ruru on March 2, Friday at Mow's in the Sobs x Subsonic Eye (SG) show!!
