TRCK REVIEW: Astro Kidd - Skyfall ft. Pzycho Sid & Dalla
The new school is on the horizon and the Philippines are ready for a worldwide invasion. Representing the United Arab Emirates, rapper Astro Kidd has just released his debut single titled “Skyfall”. The young up-and-comer also brought most of his local picks and mob members Pzycho Sid and Dalla on the track.
This single was plugged by The Visual Club and the Don't Blame the Kids Apparel Co., which didn’t surprise me because DBTK has been supporting the trap scene for a while now.
Trap music (count in Mumble Rap too) is at its peak at the very moment and Astro Kidd and friends are on their very own punk phase. But that particular type of phase will most likely to die out due to the fact that “Skyfall” won’t last long for its unmemorable hook and tedious verses.
The hook was something that should be worked on a lot more in the making. Yeah, it is full of hype and yeah it is decent but it doesn’t work out to be a full-fledged banger by adding more energy and excitement, which leads me to the verses on this thing.
Let’s jump right into the first verse. Astro Kidd’s entire verse was half-baked. Like take another look at most mumble rap verses, they are half-baked but this is the kind of ‘half-baked’ that sounded tiring and dull. Astro Kidd’s lines were underwhelming for the entire minute. The second verse – a rapper who goes by the name Pzycho Sid -- has the worst verse in my opinion. There are emcees that can actually rap in English even if English wasn’t their first language (RVRD, Space Impakto, Nemesis Q, Waiian and much more) but my goodness his verse sounded stiff, monotonous, and was simply…average, sadly. The third verse, on the contrary, Dalla, was the only good thing in this track. He was the only rapper here that carried this track even if his appearance only lasted for nearly a minute. His flow was organic, he plays around with two languages and he wasn’t being too goofy in it. Dalla showed amazing versatility but he should’ve said more. If his verse lasted more than a minute or just a few seconds longer, that way the spotlight’s going to shine on him for the entire track. The production was spot-on and I have no complaints about it, to be honest.
Overall, “Skyfall” is a track that promises a lot of potential for Astro Kidd aside from hopping on the hype train and doing what most trap rappers are doing in 2017. In my opinion, those conventions of the trap should be used properly by having a decent amount of simplicity, charisma, and versatility. “Skyfall” has one of those three essential elements BUT one thing’s for sure, they never made the track memorable enough.
