Atomic Sushi - Eloquent Review
Just when you thought shoegaze couldn't get any more explosive. Atomic Sushi’s brand new track is a tour de force of sorts. Mildly succeeding their blaring debut single “Intro to Sadness,” “Eloquent” leaps across from one risky and dangerous spot to another.
Their musical influences are quite apparent but some elements still show a sound of their own, and that’s a good thing. My observation from most college bands today tends to follow the sound of what their current generation continue to idolize and imitate (i.e. Mac Demarco, Tame Impala, or any other p4k bands), immediately gratifying their looks and style more than actual substance. Atomic Sushi has the potential when they create something new, but they are still to the point of carrying through in being peculiar than most bands in their age. Their emotional last 2-and-a-half-minute meltdown resonates with elements of psychedelic music, noise, and of course, shoegaze.
The whole track balances between ‘overbearing’ and ‘soothing’ that means there are two sides to this track. Their core sound doesn’t lack feeling, but it does twirl around with whatever auditory sensation they wish to spark off. “Eloquent” goes through a lot; the mixing is top notch, the showmanship is mint, but it quickly comes off as another psychedelic band that still stays on the same level of experimentation as other bands have already done. I wish for this band to branch a little more. Dabble with different elements of experimentation than their last release.
This brand new track of theirs still keeps up with the proficient drumming, feedback noise, flanged guitars, and Josh Morente’s fretful lyrics and vocals. If this song toned the noise down just a little bit more by the end and the vocals that could’ve been cleaned a lot better, I would appreciate this song more than I should have. Though, as “Eloquent” develops with more and more tension and buildup, the more blood-and-guts it oozes as it progresses. Their wall of sound doesn’t seem to discharge off of its undiversified sonic experience. Their sound fends off ‘indie’ conventions/labels and never shoehorns like its contemporaries -- at least, they should shy away from those forgettable, timely conventions. Atomic Sushi is a band to watch out in the near future; it’s a pleasant surprise to hear more of their material from time to time.
