Devices - Fools Review
TRCK REVIEW: Devices - Fools
"Devices" is an alt-rock band representing the Ateneo Music Org. Back in the first quarter of 2017 (as far as I can remember), this relatively new young-and-hip band kinda slipped through my fingers with their first few tracks titled “Flowers” and “Midday.” Having an almost rough start in creating a coherent track, both of the mentioned songs above are tasteless, bland, and straight-up forgettable; moreover, they are shining on their sonic skirmishing but lacking more of substance in their songwriting. "Devices" is struggling to find their sound, and I might be on the verge of giving up on this band altogether.
But wait, the review doesn’t end there. We haven’t discussed how I pretty much changed my mind on the previous statement above. This new track of theirs titled “Fools” (this track is included in the Ateneo Musicians’ Pool’s compilation album, AMPlitunes 2017) made me regain my faith in this band. I mean wow, they made a good track.
For months, I wanted this band to go somewhere with their sound. Devices did pick up the pace in their brand new song “Fools.” The twangy guitar leads shine brightly on the track. I noticed the production has become crisper than before; you can hear the instrumentals melding together properly.
“Fools” has memorable melodies, a right hook (decent "singy-songy" execution) and *finally* their synths has a useful role in here. The synths play around in the production pretty well. Devices somehow still keep the Alex Turner like vocals, but let me just pass on that and focus more on how they wrote their best song to date.
Devices surprised me in “Fools.” A lot of their mistakes are cleared in this one. The band became so much better. I would still kick it for their future releases.
