S E R I E S - Run Review
TRCK REVIEW: S E R I E S - Run
Bulacan natives S E R I E S have been a so-so synthpop trio for the past year. They've been on and off lately due to their time in work, and all other personal matters. Their new surprise single “Run,” from their upcoming debut album is quite the new and improved S E R I E S I have been waiting for in a long time.
Discussing S E R I E S may have been hit-or-miss. Their 'Ripple Effect' EP hit stars across the internet, and have gained attention in the local electronic music scene and the music blogosphere included. Their EP is packed with catchy tracks like, “Step” and “Drown,” both tracks that are heavily influenced by contemporary synth-heavy groups like Chvrches and Passion Pit. But there are other tracks on the EP that sounded premature; it was pretty clear that they needed room for improvement in the long run.
After releasing their first EP, the trio have been off into a relatively great start, they got some serious potential. The only thing that’s missing in their brand of bouncy, poppy music is their inability to create a convincing live performance. They sometimes stumble in between their synth solos and their female lead singer’s hush-type way of singing, making her sound completely inaudible at some point in the performance.
I’ve been anticipating S E R I E S debut album, and it was long-overdue since they released their last single “Care,” which was released in the 3rd quarter of 2016. I thought that single needed a little bit of work in the hook, and the vocals sounded sloppy. The progression took too long to build. But it was an “okay” single and it never did any harm to their music.
Then eventually, the trio managed to surprise us with their new single titled, “Run”. And holy hell it sounded good!
I liked “Run” for a couple of reasons: it’s brighter than ever, it’s mature, and it sort of rebrands S E R I E S as they set the bar two levels higher. This new single of theirs show so much growth in the music they’re creating; the vocals are more confident, the singing matches the production well; the kicks are alive, and its thumping sound bounces along with the synths — which are at times sonically addicting. There are layers and layers of synths that are on top of each other; creating this deep, harmonious effect that makes it wider and heavier than their sound before it.
“Run” can be S E R I E S best single to come out in a while (it can be their best track to date). The production was topnotch and it grew on me on the first listen. Their cred as a synthpop outfit has blown off the *roof* of my expectations, and they might be ready to release the album by any minute now.
The new and improved S E R I E S has finally arrived. Fans of the electro-pop genre will surely dig this track!
